6. Glenn Roy Burroughs

He was 21 years old when he graduated in 1903 from Brookfield, MO High School, a
real accomplishment for those days. While in high school he played football on
the varsity team.

He was raised in the Baptist Church, serving as a deacon, Sunday School teacher
and choir member most of his life.

He was leader of the first Boy Scout Troop in Brookfield and directed a band
for this troop as well as a band for the Park Baptist Church in Brookfield.

He was a member of the Masonic Order and of the Odd Fellows, being very active
in both organizations.

G. R. Burroughs had been a farmer, postal employee, coal miner and, in the
latter years of his life, a painter and decorator. Soon after graduation from
high school, he taught in a rural school (8 grades), but disliked the indoor
environment so stayed at it for only one year as far as I know.

In November 1942, at nearly 61 years of age, Roy Burroughs moved from
Brookfield, MO, to Portland, OR, where he took employment with Oregon
Shipbuilders to support the war effort during WW II. Many family members were
already in Oregon and in May, 1943 Edith and the remaining family members made
the move to Portland. For sure, some of the Illinois relatives believed that
Roy Burroughs had lost his mind for taking his family "out there with the
Indians." He had few regrets about the change of residence, often saying that
he would give the whole state of Missouri for his little lot in Portland, OR.

Glenn Roy Burroughs, widower of Edith May Burroughs (nee Hemphill), second
married Stella Blanche Brown (nee Conway) 24 Nov 1948. Stella Brown had been
a widow for 11 years. She is buried next to her first husband, Bert Brown.
Glenn Roy Burroughs is buried next to his first wife, Edith May Burroughs.

7. Edith May Hemphill

She was raised a Methodist and later joined the Baptist Church after moving to
Brookfield, MO. Elwood M. E. Church records for 14 April 1902 state that the
membership letters for Mr. and Mrs. James Hemphill and their daughter, Edith,
were forwarded to Brookville [sic] Brookfield, Linn County, MO. This was
probably the New Garden Baptist Church, a rural church located in Brookfield
Township, Linn Co, MO. On 18 October 1905, she was married to G. Roy Burroughs
by Rev. Grant Creekmore, minister of the New Garden Baptist Church, in the home
of her parents. Family tradition is that the first Sunday Roy Burroughs, my
father, saw Edith Hemphill sitting in the congregation of New Garden Baptist
Church, he made up his mind that he was going to marry her. Incidentally, he
had many rivals, among them Curt Baker and Bert Mahurin.
